The play is divided into three acts. Act 1 has 15 scenes, act 2 has 10 scenes, and act 3 has 13 scenes.
The play is set in the large study of Don Lorenzo’s house in Madrid. The study is furnished with a desk, a large mirror, bookshelves, seats and a fireplace.
The action begins on a winter’s day, with the light outside dimly illuminating the set. Later in the play the fireplace is lit, and dramatic scenes are played out in semi-darkness, with the only light coming from the fire.
