The play is divided into two acts. Act 1 takes place in the evening and act 2 takes place the next morning.
The play is set by a riverbank. Along the river there are lifesaving rings. The stone bench on which the characters sit is set on the other side of a wide road that separates it from the river. After the characters have murdered the Man with the Banknotes, the bench is completely bloodstained and a trail of blood runs from the bench, over the road, to the riverside.
