The play is divided into 17 scenes. There is an interval after scene 10.
General
All the action in the play takes place in the large study of a house of a well-to-do family. There are tall bookcases filled with books. The furniture is modest but elegant and there is a door and a large window.
In scene 13 Celso mentions a mirror that has appeared in the study.
Scene 17, the end of the play, consists entirely of stage directions. They state that a pendulum clock strikes six times. When the lights go up Celso is sitting in an armchair, Ismael is smoking and Lorena is standing on a ladder feeling her way among the books in the bookcases. At the end of the play the telephone in the study rings.
Lighting
The stage directions specify that the lighting should be slightly different in each scene. Unless otherwise indicated, the characters should converse in darkness for about 20 to 40 seconds at the beginning of scenes before the lights come up on stage. The lighting should never be too intense.
Sound
From time to time the muffled sound of noises from outside can be heard, particularly during long silences.
