El gran galeoto (1881), José Echegaray y Eizaguirre

Scene

The play is divided into a Prologue containing four introductory ‘conversation’ scenes, followed by three acts. Act 1 has eight scenes, act 2 has nine scenes and act 3 has eleven scenes.

Staging

The play is set in nineteenth-century Madrid. All the scenes take place indoors or on a balcony.

  • The Prologue occurs at night in a small study with a balcony. In the study there is a table with a lamp on it and papers are strewn around.
  • Act 1 is set at dusk in Don Julian’s living room. It is expensively and tastefully decorated. The room has a balcony and a door leading to the dining room. The dining room is also very luxurious.
  • Act 2 is set in the new lodgings where Ernesto has moved. It is sparsely decorated with old and cheap-looking furniture.
  • Act 3 is set back in Don Julian’s house.
