The actress Laia Marull, who played the part of Nina, was awarded the 2006 Miguel Mihura Prize for this performance. Of the performances in general, one reviewer noted that ‘Nina is a play in which the actors’ performances are to be savoured’(Mayo 2006).
The production was so successful that its run was extended by several weeks (it was initially set to run from 1 June to 9 July). The production was then restaged throughout September 2006.
Mayo, María José S. 2006. ‘Al calor del pasado’, El Confidencial, 17 June (in Spanish)
This production took place in the old cafe of the Teatro Español, creating a ‘sense of intimacy and shared experience between spectator and actor’ (Materna 2007).
Materna, Linda. 2007. ‘Staging History, Time and Memory: Two Plays by José Ramón Fernández on the 2006 Madrid Summer Stage’, Western European Stages, 19.1
This production was blighted by the sudden death of Héctor Malamud, the actor who was supposed to play Esteban. The actor who took his place, Eduardo Ruderman, only had 15 days to learn the part. This perhaps accounts for some of the negative comments in reviews regarding the quality of the acting (see Catena 2009).
Catena, Alberto. 2009. ‘Nina, un personaje y una obra con altibajos’, La Nación, 19 January (in Spanish)
During the scene in which Blas and Nina make love, the director Jorge Eines refused to show nudity on stage, preferring to engage the audience’s imagination by suggestion rather than explicitness.
This was a dramatised reading of the play.
