The premiere of the play was extremely successful.
Despite considering La malquerida as Benavente’s best work, Enrique Llovet, writing in El País, disliked this production. He thought it was too old-fashioned, with little to interest contemporary audiences (1977).

This production attracted considerable press interest because of the director’s decision to cast much younger actors in the roles of Raimunda, Esteban and Rubio.
This production was hugely popular, to the extent that it toured the United States and Canada with 750 performances. In his article about the play’s impact during Benavente’s lifetime, Enrique Llovet described the title that Garrett chose for the play – The Passion Flower – as ‘ridiculous’ (1977).
