The play is divided into three acts. Act 1 has one scene, act 2 has five scenes and act 3 has five scenes.
The action takes place in Madrid. The play begins outside a half-built house, surrounded by scaffolding and construction equipment. Scenes 1, 2 and 3 of act 2 take place inside an apartment block. Scenes 4 and 5 of this act take place inside and around the Face of God hermitage. A street square is filled with sellers of food and drink as the neighbourhood celebrates Easter. Act 3 is set inside and around the half-built house.
The play contains a number of songs and musical interludes. These were written by the composer Ruperto Chapí.
