Just one actress, Zutoia Alarcia, played all the female roles, impressing even the playwright himself with her performances.
This was the world premiere of the play. Its producers, Xabi Puerta and Paco Obregón, recall the pressure they felt under, not least because at the time Sastre had announced that the play would be the last thing he ever wrote for the stage. Xabi Puerta notes that sometimes he exercises the vain thought that their production of Ulalume went some way towards encouraging Sastre to start writing for theatre again in 1995 (Sastre 2006: 478).
Sastre, Alfonso. 2006. ‘¿Dónde estás, Ulalume, dónde estás?’. In Teatro escogido, vol II, ed. Javier Villán. Madrid, Asociación de Autores de Teatro (in Spanish)
This production toured a number of theatres in Spain, always to great success. Critics were particularly impressed with the director’s use of just three actors to create the Poe world and convey the delirium and madness of Eddy Poe’s last days.
Pictures and a video of this production can be found on Juan Carlos Pérez de la Fuente’s professional website [accessed April 2011].
