Pic-Nic (c.1952), Fernando Arrabal

This is a one-act play.

Pic-Nicis set on a battlefield divided in half by a barbed-wire fence, from which hang sandbags.
At the start of the play, Zapo relaxes by knitting. His parents bring with them a picnic and a music player. Zapo and Zepo are dressed in military uniforms that look very similar, although Zapo’s is grey and Zepo’s is green. Both men have rifles.
The Red Cross men carry a stretcher.
Throughout the play, the sounds of gunfire and aerial bombardments interrupt the action. At one point, Mr and Mrs Tepan shelter from the bombs under an umbrella. The noise of the bombardment is so loud at this point that it drowns out their conversation.
At no point during the play do we actually see the enemy planes flying overhead, or the bombs falling during air raids.
